A Valpo Life in the Spotlight: Lynette Will-Murphy

This week’s life in the spotlight is Lynette Will-Murphy, owner and operator of Will Power Fitness in Valparaiso. Murphy, a longtime resident of the area, established her business just three years ago with the goal, “To motivate, encourage, inspire, and educate individuals with the hopes of making a difference in someone else’s life”.

With the help of her passion and determination, she has made an impact on numerous people in the community. She started working out with the goal to be healthier after having her third child by joining a local gym and taking an exercise class. Lynette soon found herself becoming competitive with those around her.

She found a drive, which she says has always been a part of her nature to be both positive and challenging, and just what she needed. Shortly thereafter following the suggestion of her instructor, Lynette began her journey as a fitness instructor and trainer. She now holds certifications in: AFAA Certified Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor, Turbo Kickboxing, Hip Hop Hustle, TRX Suspension Training, PiYo Strength, INSANITY, CPR/AED.

She is an active member and participant of the National Physique Committee (NPC) and recently placed 2nd in the Open Figure division at the 2016 Indiana Natural Bodybuilding show as well as 2nd in the Masters Figure division and tied for 3rd in the Open Figure division at the 2016 Ohio Natural Bodybuilding show. She is part of the BeachBody Talent Team representing the INSANITY format and was selected from over 1000 applicants.

What Lynette does different compared to other fitness establishments, is that she makes each class unique. She will take aspects from different workout regimens to create classes that she finds gratifying and to be a challenge to her clients. Yet with each class, there are modifications that can be made based on each person’s fitness level and ability.

Being a Mom, she also understands how important it is to make classes accessible for mothers. Monday through Friday there is childcare for only three dollars a child during her 9am class. In addition to her variety of classes, which you can find on her website and on her Facebook. Murphy is a personal trainer. She works with people of all ages as well as couple’s sessions.

Lynette says that, “Seeing the difference personal fitness makes in each person’s life is rewarding.” But she does not allow her clients to give her credit for the changes they’ve made, “They are the ones who did the hard work, I encourage my clients to give self-credit for what they’ve accomplished!”

In addition to her business Lynette is also the mother of three boys, has two dogs, and a boyfriend who she credits for helping her get to where she is today. She and her family enjoy all that Valpo has to offer especially the festivals and concerts. Lynette enjoys her Sunday runs around downtown and having family close by.

This year, Lynette is excited to have her own team for the Popcorn Panic Race which you can sign up for at Team Will Power.

Murphy encourages people to step out of their comfort zone by joining a class or finding a buddy to work out with and hold them accountable. She said to “Enjoy what you’re doing, that is what is most important”.

She encourages you to join up with a friend, you’ll be embraced with welcome arms, and then step away from the workout knowing that you’ve done something good. Her biggest advice though for anyone out there who is struggling to take that first step is, “Don’t let fear decide your fate”.
