Good People Awards – Crazy Idea of the Day

I love to write.  I wish I had a lot more time to write.  It is really the only way I have found to get all the thoughts out of my head that run around every day, and is like therapy, but less expensive and does not require you to fill out insurance paperwork.

I tend to write how I talk – a lot, rambling, wildly going from one subject to the other, a kinetic burst of disorganized energy that asks tons of questions, mostly because the answers to all of those questions are interesting to me.  Often that keeps me from writing as often as I would like because the pressure is there to completely cover whatever subject it is that sparks the idea.  Procrastination, until “ I have the time” leads to many small ideas clogged upstairs rather than getting out of the head and onto the keyboard.  That is probably often good, since I have a lot of crazy ideas, many of which should die a quiet death because they really are goofy.  Today though the brain was full and it needed a release valve of at least one of these goofy ideas so it does not explode.  Writing it down seemed to work.

Good People Awards ?

We are a society that loves to give out and get awards, whether that be in movies or music, a business function, or an athletic or performance event.  They are time honored ways to honor people or groups of people that have done something truly amazing.  Some times though they are self important people who give out awards to other self important people, industry legends, or some muckety muck in that area of our world.  Not that they are not very deserving, as they did whatever it is that the particular group sets out as the objective or standard, and are being recognized for being exceptional in some way or another.   They can be a bit stuffy though, or prestigious, or well serious.

What if we had an awards celebration all based on people being Good?  Not good at some specific thing in terms of talent, brain power, success, or specific accomplishment.  Just Good.  Nice, giving, warm, positive, funny, caring, real, honest, …. You know.  The kind of person you say “so and so, is just a good guy or a nice lady”, when someone asks you about them.   Not just in Valpo. Everywhere.  They don’t have to be the one the titans of industry, or the brilliant heart surgeon, or the leader of the church, town, school, organization, team, or even someone that everybody knows.  Just Good.  Nobody’s perfect, and just about everybody has some detractors, but a group of individuals that if most people pulled their political, business, or personal bias glasses off, would say…. Yeah – Good People.  Crazier things have happened.

So let me ask you.  Is that a crazy idea?  How would you decide?  Would enough people actually care?  Is it enough to be Good at just being Good?  Who are Good People that you know ? How could it work?
