According to the latest data for sales of single-family existing homes, the real estate market in both Lake and Porter Counties showed continued improvement, reports Jeanne Sommer, broker/owner of CENTURY 21 Alliance Group in Valparaiso, IN.
If you are thinking of selling, now is the time to put your home on the market, advises Sommer. “Typically people wait until May to list their homes because the weather is nicer,” said Sommer. “Yet now is a better time because currently our demand is higher than our supply.”
So far this year, more homes sold in less time for a higher price in Lake County when compared to the same months in 2012, while Porter County also saw an increase in home sales and the average sales price.
The number of single-family existing home sales increased from 502 in Lake County in 2012 to 637 in the first two months of 2013 and from 196 in Porter County to 215. Meanwhile, the average sales price on single-family homes rose from $112,857 to $128,174 in Lake County and from $175,208 to $185,406 in Porter County.
In addition, the number of days a property was listed on the market was down from 146 last year in Lake County to 126 this year, while Porter County saw an increase from 157 to 179. All data was provided by the Greater Northwest Indiana Association of Realtors and calculated from January 1 to February 28 in 2013 and compared to the same time period in 2012.
