Iconic Chesterton Landmark The Port Drive-In is Now for Sale

A Chesterton mainstay is currently up for sale and available to purchase for those yearning to own a piece of nostalgic Americana from a bygone era.

The Port Drive-In, located at 419 N. Calumet in Chesterton has been the source of hot dogs and old-fashioned root beer since 1953. Purchased in 1957 by Elise and Virgil Gassoway, this iconic location has been host to diners looking to dine in or drive up for decades. Century 21 Alliance group's Terry McCaleb is currently working to find a buyer to purchase this unique piece of Chesterton history and feels that this is a perfect opportunity to own a piece of historical significance from a radically different America.

"I think this property will grab people's interest because it is such a unique property," says McCaleb. "Old fashioned drive-in root beer stands are few and far between these days, and I believe the ambiance of The Port Drive-In reminds us of a cherished time in our American culture and history that people want to be a part of. That's nearly 60 years of business just within the Gassoway family, and that's pretty impressive."

For prospective buyers, taking the leap and purchasing this property, it comes with more benefits than initially seen. Buyers purchasing this property not only get the building but everything included with it. This includes ownership of the business and equipment.

"I believe that potential buyers will be interested in the fact that with the Port Drive-In you are not only purchasing the land and the building, but the entire business, equipment and all," says McCaleb. "On top of that, the Gassoway's are even willing to participate in the transition to the new owners."

For the Gassoway's, this long time business has finally come to a point where it's time to move on to different owners and while they are ready to retire, they prefer to hand the business off to another caring owner rather than abandon the business in its entirety.

"The business is in great condition and continues to offer significant and stable cash-flow for the owners," says McCaleb. "That being said, they are ready to retire and hand the reins over to someone new. The Gassoway's have always run the drive-in as a seasonal business, which means they only work six or seven months of the year. You have to ask yourself 'how great is that?'"

McCaleb hopes that everyone who is interested in owning a Chesterton classic, wanting to start their own restaurant business or those looking for an adventurous life change consider this one of a kind property. If anything, to say you own one of the last pieces of America's yesteryear.

"Really, you can't go wrong,' says McCaleb. "The business is profitable and maintains a substantial and established clientele who come back year after year. In addition, since the entire property and business are being sold together, it makes it far easier for those with even very little restaurant experience to make their aspirations a reality."
