Lake Area United Way and United Way of Porter County Name Debra Townsend AFL-CIO Community Services Liaison

Lake Area United Way LogoLake Area United Way and United Way of Porter County have announced the staff addition of Debra Townsend as the organizations’ shared AFL-CIO Community Services Liaison. Debra will be responsible for helping union members locate resources for assistance through United Way agencies. Additionally, she will match union members with community volunteer opportunities. This United Way – Union partnership helps improve our communities by working to ensure everyone has access to the quality health and human services they need to live a good life.

“With Deb on board, we look forward to an even closer working relationship with our valued union partners. Our organizations share a focus on building strong vibrant communities that work to raise standards of living for all,” said Dan Murchek, President of Northwest Indiana Federation of Labor. “The partnership provides union members a conduit to make real impact in the communities in which they live and work. Whether it be financial contributions, advocating for those in need or volunteering their skills--they are shaping their communities,” added Randy Palmateer, Business Manager, Northwest Indiana Building Trades Council.

Debra holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education from Drake University. Her background includes teaching and resource development for nonprofits. She and her husband reside in Portage.
