Dr. Barbara Fuller Named VNA Physician of the Year

vna-physician-of-the-year-2016The Visiting Nurse Association honored Dr. Barbara Fuller, MD at the VNA Annual Recognition Banquet on February 22nd, naming her VNA Physician of the Year for 2015.

Each year, the VNA bestows this award, named in honor of VNA Medical Director and Board Member Dr. Kenneth Black, a retired physician whose practice always affirmed the vital importance of hospice care. In nominating Dr. Fuller as Physician of the Year, VNA nurses expressed their warm appreciation for her genuine commitment to compassionate care for her patients.

Dr. Fuller is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Medical Oncology. She graduated with an MD degree from Rush Medical College in December of 1975. Her graduate training included an internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at the Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. She stayed on at Rush for post graduate training in the specialties of Hematology and Medical and was an attending MD at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital as well as an Instructor in the Internal Medicine training program. She first began practicing in Northwest Indiana in 1986 and now has a primary location at St. Mary’s Hospital in Hobart, IN.

Her philosophy and approach to medicine has always been to be truthful and compassionate; to listen carefully, answer tough questions honestly, and, to spend the extra time every person needs in order to gain some understanding of a sometimes grave medical condition. These are the very values VNA nurses mentioned in nominating Dr. Fuller as the Physician of the Year.

As a hematologist-oncologist, Dr. Fuller recognizes and supports the need for terminally ill patients and their families to find the compassionate care, as well as effective pain control and symptom management provided by hospice. The VNA is grateful to Dr. Fuller for choosing VNA Hospice to serve her patients.
