It’s been just over a year since Alison Williams joined the team at General Insurance Services as a Commercial Lines Agent. In that time, she has been able make her presence known in Porter County.
Serving as an Ambassador to the Duneland Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Chesterton-Porter Rotary Club, and a volunteer with Porter County CASA, Williams has dedicated herself to being involved in the community. She also volunteers for Chesterton High School Band Boosters and heads out to the Chesterton European Market as often as she can. Her face and name are well-known throughout the area, something she enjoys and is used to, however:
“There are few places my son can go now where people don’t know him or have seen his face on my Facebook page,” she said laughing. “That is probably unfortunate for him!”
Williams is tied to the community through her family, friends, and the relationships she has built through her work at GIS.
Born and raised in Chesterton, Williams still lives in the small town with her 17-year-old son. She studied at Indiana University Bloomington, and then returned home to Northwest Indiana where she started working at Blue Chip Casino. After a few years, she transferred to retail, where she managed the GUESS Factory at the Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets in Michigan City.
Her experience in retail sales prepared her to then apply to Chase Bank in Chesterton. She worked there for eight years as a personal and private client banker. At Chase, she did a little bit of everything and at the end of eight years she moved toward a more client-focused role, where she began working more one-on-one with clients.
“I loved the relationship building part of it,” she said. “Getting to know people, answering questions, and helping them while they’re at significant stages of their life.”
Williams has been there when her clients purchased a new home, welcomed a new baby, and even when that baby got accepted to college.
“I really enjoyed working with my clients’ time after time and learning what was important to them,” she said.
Her knack for relationship-building helped her transition to General Insurance Services, where she has created those same relationships with her new clients. She has been at the Valparaiso office for a little over a year now.
Every day is different, she claims, but she is once again working one-on-one with clients, making sure their commercial insurance needs are taken care of. She networks with prospective businesses that would be a good fit for the company, while maintaining her current client relationships, all of which positively impacts GIS as a whole. Plus, the connections she has made with insurance carriers helps when negotiating policies on her client’s behalf.
“This is really the best fit for me because you become a trusted advisor for business owners. They want a good relationship so they can trust you to make the best decisions,” she said, adding in that she likes to be the person one turns to for advice.
Her many roles in organizations throughout Porter County fit in perfectly with the GIS mission to secure the future of the communities they serve. The GIS name can be seen on sponsorship banners and employee shirts during countless number of community events, all of which Williams enjoys attending so much.
Having lived in Chesterton her entire life, Williams has built her own strong, unwavering relationships with friends and family.
“I have a really close group of friends. We go to the movies, to town, and just hang out,” she said. “I also spend a lot of time with my son. This is the last year I get to follow him around.”
Her son plays percussion in the Chesterton High School band, and is on the baseball team, which takes up a lot of summer evenings.
Other evenings are spent on the beach at the Indiana Dunes.
“I appreciate the Dunes a lot more now than I did when I was a kid,” she said. “I love living and working in this community, and giving back when I can.”
