Donna Draper Welter, 89, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on the 19th of June. She was born March 12, 1924 in Gary Indiana to Leontine and Alfred P. Draper. She was a proud graduate of Lew Wallace High School where she learned to embody the school motto: “Character is Higher than Intellect”. She also attended William Woods College in Fulton, MO and Butler University.
On May 31, 1947 she married William J. Welter and embarked on a life’s journey that took them from Gary to South Bend then Valparaiso; together raising 5 children while building successful businesses. She is survived by her children: David (Betty) of Cape Coral, FL; Chuck of Valparaiso; Cyril (Melissa) of Lee’s Summit, MO; Wayne (Beth) of Valparaiso; and Wendy (Brent) Meyers of Collierville, TN.
She had a special love for her 14 grandchildren: Michael, Melissa, Christine; Bill, Liz, Jen, Katy; Dylan, Mia; Amy, Matt; Courtney, Ryan, Lindsey; and 6 great-grandchildren. During her life she cherished her family, friends, sisters in P.E.O. and Pi Beta Phi, the communities in which she lived, and her beloved Lilly Lake near Jones, Michigan. She also held special affection for the Valparaiso University Law School which brought her husband’s and her family to Northwest Indiana in the early 1900s.
She will be remembered fondly for her positive spirit, strength of conviction, and her caring and generous nature. She extended her support beyond her family to the whole community around her. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Visitation will be held at Bartholomew’s Funeral Home from 2:00PM to 8:00PM this Friday the 21st. The funeral service will be at the First Presbyterian Church of Valparaiso at 10:00AM on Saturday the 22nd, followed by burial at Ridge Lawn Cemetery in Gary. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Porter County Community Foundation (P.O. Box 302, Valparaiso, IN 46384) in her memory.
