Bailly Elementary Second Graders Learn Economics

Bailly-Sweet-Treat-FactoryBailly Elementary second grade students in Chesterton have been learning about economics by studying about wants, goods, services, consumers, producers and resources. As a way to apply these learned skills, second grade teachers Nancy Moats, Stephanie Strawbridge and Susan Tonk created the “Bailly Sweet Treat Factory.

The three classes, comprised of 104 second graders, worked in in shifts to create over 3200 chocolate dipped pretzel sticks sprinkled with colorful nonpareils.

Each child was required to fill out a job application and was assigned a job in the company. Jobs ranged from assembling the product to packaging and tagging. All the students helped with the marketing process by making in-school commercials and posters to advertise their upcoming project. Students received on-the-job training, and even earned a paycheck (class cash) for their hard work.

The students took orders from the whole school for the treats. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Henryville Elementary School in southern Indiana. This is the school that was recently hit by a tornado in early March. The donation will be over $1000.

We like to encourage giving to charity, said Moats. “The students need to know how important it is to give.”
