IU Northwest Offers a ‘Freshman to Physician’ Experience

Prospective medical students invited to learn more at Nov. 9 event

rot6High school students and undergraduates interested in pursuing a pre-med track in college are invited to learn more at the Freshman to Physician Experience, a free pre-medical admissions conference from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday Nov. 9 in the Bruce W. Bergland Auditorium in the Savannah Center.

Attendees will learn about how IU Northwest's pre-professional program prepares students for medical school, get advice on getting admitted to medical school, learn about medical research opportunities and scholarships available to undergraduates, and hear from current students about their own experiences.

Asad Torabi, a first year medical student at the IU School of Medicine – Northwest, recently completed the pre-med track, graduating from IU Northwest in 2011 with a degree in psychology and double minors in chemistry and biology. Torabi plans to complete his entire four years of medical education at the Northwest campus.

More and more Northwest medical students, like Torabi, are also electing to stay local to take advantage of the smaller campus atmosphere known for its plentiful opportunities, typically in shorter supply at other larger campuses.

By completing his medical education at IUSM-NW, Torabi knows he’ll garner a hearty dose of hands-on experience and direct contact with patients and families as well as the opportunity to undertake research projects related to public health issues that affect Northwest Indiana communities.

“IU School of Medicine-Northwest is the right fit for me,” Torabi said. “I want my education to come from real experiences that are one-on-one with a doctor.” For information, or to register for the medical admissions conference, contact Megan LoGreco at (219) 981-4348 or mlogreco@iun.edu.
