William C. Moyers to Speak about Addiction at 5th Annual Living Health, Balance & Hope Symposium – May 23, 2013 at Valparaiso University Harre Union

rot001Porter-Starke Services Foundation will host its 5th Annual Living Health, Balance & Hope Symposium and Breakfast with William C. Moyers on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at 8:00am at Valparaiso University’s Harre Union located at 1509 Chapel Drive in Valparaiso, Indiana. Moyers is Vice President of Public Affairs and Community Relations for Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation and the author of Broken: My Story of Addiction and Redemption, a New York Times Bestseller, and Now What? An Insider’s Guide to Addiction and Recovery.

From the depths of an Atlanta crack house to the ranks of leadership at Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, William will share his personal story of addiction and journey to recovery. The privileged son of journalist Bill Moyers, William’s teenage drug use gradually evolved into an adulthood addiction to alcohol and crack cocaine. His final binge at age 35 became the turning-point in his recovery. Now clean and sober for two decades, William’s honest and inspiring account is a reminder that there is more to recovery than abstinence, that hitting bottom isn’t just about alcohol or other drugs, and that some of life’s most valuable lessons materialize along the road traveled.
