Bike Event Planned at IU Northwest for October 4

rot1Indiana University Northwest invites cycling enthusiasts to participate in SlowRoll@IUN, a cycling event organized by the Department of Communication’s Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) on Saturday, Oct. 4.

Bicyclists will roll through the community beginning at 8:30 a.m. from IU Northwest’s parking lot, located at the corner of 33rd Street and Broadway Avenue on the northeast end of the campus.

Participants can choose one of three routes, ranging from 2.2 to 6.3 miles, to be led by regional Bicycle Patrol Officers and Trek Bike Shop Ambassadors nationally certified in cycling. Each registrant receives a safety check, a bike skills experience, an overview of the “rules of the road” for cycling, and a snack pack of water and food for their ride.

Participants will be enrolled in the League of American Bicyclists Million mile event and will be part of the national kickoff from Cleveland to Sweden including Detroit and now, Chicago, with the SlowRoll effort of cyclists to revitalize communities by connecting with their communities.

SlowRoll@IUN is organized the Department of Communication’s Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), led by President Kostadin Petroski, senior public relations student and PRSSA’s chapter adviser, Bonita Neff, Ph.D., the first national educational bicycling director for the League and the 24th certified cyclist in the Effective Cycling program.

Professor Neff has trained bicycle patrols, transportation specialists, and safety council representatives with non-motorized transportation grants, a federal program.

The fee to register is $5. To participate, register online at www.PRSSAIUN.weebly.com and be sure to bring with you the signed liability waiver available on the registration site. For more information, contact Neff at (219) 980-6998.
