Valparaiso University’s Brauer Museum of Art welcomes “Borders,” an installation by renowned Icelandic artist Steinunn Thórarinsdóttir. An opening reception and artist talk will be held Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. in the Brauer Museum.
After popular displays in New York City, Seattle, Dallas, and Chicago, “Borders” comes to Valparaiso University to intrigue campus and community viewers with its life-sized figures and themes of sameness and difference.
“After its successful time in downtown Chicago by the Art Institute, with the duration of the display extended twice due to popular demand, Borders comes to a peaceful campus setting where I think all who see the sculptures will be impressed and inspired,” Gregg Hertzlieb, director and curator of the Brauer Museum, said.
The 11 pairs of life-sized sculptures, made of cast iron and aluminum, represent contrasts in life and the human condition — light and shadow, heavy and light, heaven and earth. According to Thórarinsdóttir, the installation engages the viewers in a direct and intimate way and can be seen as symbols of humanity and cultural diversity.
The contemporary Icelandic artist has been working as a sculptor for 35 years and has displayed her work in prominent exhibitions around the world. The figures in “Borders” are based on her eldest son’s body and explore the dichotomy of human existence that reflects both division and unity.
