IU Northwest Announces Winners of 60th Annual Calumet Regional Science Fair and Associated Art Exhibit

More than 70 student scientists from 15 Lake County schools participated in the 60th Calumet Regional Science Fair and Associated Art Exhibit Saturday at Indiana University Northwest.

The fair is divided into three divisions or grade levels, including: Elementary (EL): Grades K-5; Junior (JR): Grades 6-8; and Senior (SR): Grades 9-12. Each division is then subdivided into 20 categories.

Julia Chael (Munster High School), took top honors in the senior division. Her project, titled “Study of Far-Ultraviolet Emissions from Globular Clusters in M87,” explored the data taken from a far cluster and her analysis has led to questioning of some current theory on the cluster. She has also written a paper on her work that has been accepted for publication.

Aditya Mishra (Munster High School), took second place in the senior division. His project, titled “Influence of heat generation on the performance and lifespan of lithium ion batteries,” addresses the current problems with hover boards.

Also in the senior division, third, fourth and fifth places went to Shania Mitchell, Johnathan Marquez and Leonard Ramos, respectively, all representing Hammond High School.

In the Junior Division, first place was awarded to Zayn Shareef of Montessori Children’s Schoolhouse in Hammond, while second place was taken by Annie Ostojic of Wilbur Wright Middle School in Munster.

In the Elementary Division, first place was awarded to Bryce Gelarden of Frank H Hammond Elementary School in Munster, while second place went to Muaaz Shareef of Montessori Children’s Schoolhouse in Hammond.

Angelica Murrillo of St. Stanislaus School in East Chicago took Best of Show with her pastel entitled “Flowers” in the Associated Art Fair.

The top 10 Senior Division science projects receive a trip to the Indiana State Science Fair in Indianapolis. At the state science fair, the participants compete for a trip to the International Science Fair as well as other awards.

The top ten achievers in the Junior and Elementary Divisions receive a trip to compete at the Indiana State Science Fair in Indianapolis. There is no junior division at the International Fair so the State Fair is their final competition.

Next year’s Calumet Regional Science Fair and Associated Art Exhibit is scheduled for March 10-12, 2017 at IU Northwest. More information about participating in the science fair, may visit: http://www.iun.edu/science-fair/.
