Art, Theatre, Writing and Friendship Connect in 2 Valpo Art Rooms

Valpo-Schools-Fish-Plays-Collage-04-28-16For the last month, 2nd Graders at Memorial and Parkview Elementary schools have been hard at work on an interdisciplinary project in art class that was based on the book, Rainbow Fish.

Students created larger than life 3D watercolor Fish which were used in an art room play about friendship. All students wrote and proposed a play about friendship and one student from each grade level was chosen to have their play acted out by the class using the large stuffed fish. Libby Vatthauer of Memorial Elementary was chosen for her play, Making Friends, while Ethan Poisel of Parkview Elementary was chosen for Sir Gerald the Fish Solves Problems. The 3D fish will be displayed at the Memorial Opera House during the Spring into the Arts event during the month of May.

Art Teacher, Gretchen Scott, of Memorial and Parkview Elementary schools reflected, “Memorial and Parkview 2nd graders were thrilled to create their fish, write their plays on friendship and act them out. Seeing themselves in the video we recorded was extremely gratifying and exciting to all of them as the culmination of our project. Each class shined in their individual creative skills as well as in the teamwork demonstrated in acting out the plays. I could not be prouder of their work!”
