When it comes to educating the public on the importance of recycling and preservation of the local environment, Porter County Recycling & Waste Reduction is leading the way to increase public awareness.

Among the leading programs that they engage in is the Porter County Master Recycler program, which was the first of its kind offered in the state of Indiana. The program has been a hit since it first began in 2014 and has helped educate members of the Porter County through classes and volunteer work.

Bonnie Swarner is one such Master Recycler who has shown her dedication to improving the environment in Northwest Indiana and is even a finalist for a $10,000 grant.

The grant is being offered through Citizen E, which awards citizen entrepreneurs, citizen ecologists, and citizen examples who take responsibility for a corner of their world.

The project Swarner is working on would create fishing line recycling stations in the Lake Michigan and Kankakee watersheds in order to lower the impact of discarded fishing line making its way into the waterways and harming wildlife.

Please vote for her project so this great recycling program can be brought to these areas!

Public voting will inform the final judging and evaluation (i.e., based on need, innovation, and impact) of each of the 10 finalists' proposed projects. Voting is open until February 21, 2018.
