Northwest Indiana Breast Care Center at Methodist Hospitals Pampers and Educates Women at Healthy Night Out with the Girls

The Northwest Indiana Breast Care Center at Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus hosted a Healthy Night Out with Girls event to give women a chance to pamper themselves and get some much-needed information on cervical cancer. Once the check-in process was complete, ladies were free to head up to the Breast Care Center, where they could enjoy refreshments and receive free spa services. Some of the spa services included, chair and hand massages, free bra fittings by a certified bra fitter, as well as free bone density scans.

“Back in 2012, the Center noticed that they were really not a lot of events around the community that were focused around women’s health,” said Jennifer Sanders, Manager of the Breast Care Center. “Realizing the need, the Center in return created an event centralized around women’s health and pampering.”

Advancing lives and helping to educate women on preventing cervical cancer and HPV has been one of the primary goals of the Breast Care Center.

“Women are usually the first people to neglect their health and take care of others,” said Dr. Vida McGhee-Lewis, MD, of Methodist Hospitals’ Obstetrics and Gynecology Department. “Taking part in today’s services helps people to educate themselves on their health and ease tensions on the effects that medication can have.”

All participants enjoyed their snacks and refreshments as they made their way around all of the spa services and free testing rooms. Each guest was given a chance to participate in all of the provided services before the educational seminar began.

“I just wanted to come today to feel relaxed, meet other people, and talk to some people that could have been going through cancer,” said Teresa Cruz, a breast cancer survivor. “I really, really enjoyed myself this afternoon.”

As spa treatments wrapped up, Dr. McGhee-Lewis began her educational seminar on HPV related cancers and diseases. McGhee began explaining the essential elements of each disease and infection and continued on to explain how men’s and women’s bodies are affected.

“We are not only trying to educate the public and create awareness but also educate our health care providers on why it is so important to get the HPV vaccine,” said Gail Magsaysay, Oncology Nurse Navigator. “This vaccine is the only vaccine that can prevent cancer and therefore save lives.”

This event is not the only event held at the Breast Care Center. It also provides three fun, educating, and pampering events a year, which focus on a variety of important health topics. Each event is intended to create awareness and save lives in Northwest Indiana.

“If I could give one piece of advice to someone right now I would say they need to make it a priority to live, love, and take care of their health because you never know what is right around the corner,” Cruz said.
