Eric Wise’s design to be featured on a flyer promoting the 2011 International Human Cadaver Prosection Program 
Eric Wise, a recent graduate of Wheeler High School, can now add artwork recognized by the IU School of Medicine – Northwest (IUSM-NW) to his portfolio.
Wise, who will be attending Ivy Tech in Bloomington, Ind. in August, became aware of the design contest through his high school art teacher, Leslie West. Students were instructed that their artwork should be reflective of medicine, science and the human body, as the winning submission would be developed into a promotional flyer for the 2011 International Human Cadaver Prosection Program (IHCPP).
“I had no idea what prosection was when Ms. West first gave us this assignment,” Wise said. “To help us out, she provided us with some books and magazines and I looked through those for inspiration.”
The winning submission, selected from more than 25 entries, features a skeleton’s hand touching his chin.
“I thought it would be cool if the skeleton was in the same pose as the Thinker,” Wise said. “So, that’s what I did.”
Although this is the first art contest Wise has won, he is not new to the art world.
“He has been drawing since he was little,” Wise’s mother, Millie, said. “He started drawing the minute he was able to hold a pencil and used to carry around a sketch pad everywhere he went.”
Recognizing her son’s talent, she was first to say her son’s artistic ability did not come from her.
“His dad is a graphic designer,” she said. “I’d say that is where he gets his creative talent.”
Wise hopes to keep art central to his life while attending college and has even considered following in his father’s steps by studying graphic design.
Wise’s design has been developed into a promotional flyer for the 2011 IHCPP. This program, which takes place annually on the campus of IUSM-NW, provides non-physician and non-medical student volunteers the opportunity to become active participants in a gross anatomy lab. The 2011 program will take place August 2 – 4.
