Firefighters – Serving and Saving

The Valparaiso Firefighters Local 1124 served their annual pancake breakfast at Applebees, with this being the third year in a row they've hosted.

President of the Valpo Firefigthers, David Souders said, "What we do is, throughout the year, we give to different charities and events to basically replenish our account in order to give back to the public. So, essentially everyone who gives to this event, gives back to the community."

When past president Jeff Lawley started this event three years ago, they received around $2500 in donations, but David felt confident that, "...this year the numbers are looking even stronger. I wouldn't be surprised if we're over $3-4000."

The department does events all year round, with their Halloween party giving back $80,000 in contributions to the public, not to mention the constant reassurance of the safety of the Valparaiso citizens on behalf of their firefighters.

Mr. Souders expressed, " I don't know if people are aware of what we do and who we are, but we are a non-profit organization. We work with a really great group of people. They believe and they live what we're all about. We're just proud of them and our community and we try to do anything that we can."
