Summer Camp at the Valparaiso Family YMCA is Full of Surprises

2014-Valparaiso-YMCA-Summer-Camp-01On Wednesday, June 11, 2014, a big white truck pulled up to the Valparaiso Family YMCA with a Cow named Katey and a calf named Andy. The truck and drivers along with the cows were from Fair Oaks Farms and came to visit the Summer Camps and Child Care children at the Y.

The children got to pet the cow and calf, learn about what they ate and drank. Andy was only 8 days old, older than some of the Y kids. The campers learned that a cow produces 8 gallons of milk a day. They had more fun as they got to explore and see photos of Fair Oaks farm, different kinds of cows and see Katey and Andy up close.

The Valparaiso Family YMCA Camp is structured by a daily schedule which provides focused activities developed from weekly themes. Camp activities will include: cooperative games, team sports, arts & crafts, singing, performance arts, storytelling, cooking, outdoor living skills, environmental education, community service, fitness classes, and swimming. Camp activities will be held outdoors on YMCA grounds in our pavilion. The YMCA facility includes a playground, youth wellness room, swimming pool, and gym.

Due to a generous donation by our Y Board Member Ms. Jacki Stutzman, this year we are adding the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Curriculum as part of our Summer Camp experience.

Campers can register as needed for one or two weeks or all 10 weeks. Summer Camp runs now through August 15, 2014. Call the Y at 219.462.4185 or go to our web site –valpoymca.org for more details.
