Family & Youth Services Bureau of Porter County’s Annual Chalk the Walk Brings Pops of Color and Family Fun to Valparaiso

Courthouse Square is a little more colorful after sponsored local artists put chalk to the sidewalk during Saturday’s 6th annual Chalk the Walk event hosted by Family & Youth Services Bureau of Porter County.

The rain mostly held off or came in drizzling spurts, but the artists were prepared to protect their masterpieces-in-progress with tarps, tents, umbrellas, and beach towels. The family-friendly event was more than just eye candy; activities for the kids were scheduled for the full day, including face painting, caricature drawing, games, sing-alongs, and even an opportunity to make your own mask with representatives from The Memorial Opera House.

Culver’s brought custard coupons and Valpo Velvet, a local favorite and event sponsor, brought delicious ice cream. The annual event is a good chance to welcome businesses and companies from around the area to interact with the community in a fun atmosphere.

“Chalk the Walk is a good local marketing opportunity for businesses in the community in a high-traffic area,” said Kate Flannery, Director of Development and Community Relations for Family & Youth Services Bureau of Porter County.

Stephanie Larr of Valparaiso, a longtime patron of Duffy’s, a local tavern, is not a professional artist but brought the opportunity to the owner when it first appeared and has been doing the art on Duffy’s behalf ever since.

“I always enjoy walking around and seeing everybody’s art,” Larr said of her continued involvement. “It’s a great event.”

If you’re looking for a free, family-friendly event, the rain is still holding off and the art will be on the walk until it washes off. Head over to the square for bright blocks of chalk art and fun activities for the kids. As Flannery says, the Chalk the Walk community event is “about bringing families together in a creative way.”
