Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana's ReStore celebrates its sixth year this month. ReStore, which is a donation center that accepts new and used bulding materials for resale, aids Habitat for Humanity with its goal of funding house builds.
According to Kim DeRisi, ReStore manager, the most exciting thing about being involved with ReStore is witnessing the generosity of others. DeRisi recalled a time when a donator sent over three truckloads of sellable merchandise worth about $40,000. It is because of these donations that ReStore has been able to serve its purpose the past six years. Like any retail store, a goal in sales is set at the beginning of the year. Since DeRisi stepped into her position, this goal has always been met because of the donations being received.
"Its pretty amazing how the ReStores are growing in population. People are recycling more," DeRisi said. Most ReStores in the area have been around for five years or less. DeRisi credits the donations and learning what customers want as reasons why ReStore keeps moving forward.
Dan Klein, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana, believes the very essence of ReStore is what keeps it successful.
"We're making an image. More people are people are finding out about us and they love the idea of funding homes with their donations," Klein said
ReStores goal for next year is to be able to make enough to fund a build on its own. Currently, Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana has three builds being planned for this year in East Chicago, Gary and Lowell.
To celebrate its 6th year anniversary, the entire ReStore will be 50 percent off on April 30. Customers can recieve door prizes, enjoy refreshments and bid on numerous of items during a silent auction. Silent auction items include an Omni membership for one month, sports memorabilia and certificates for restaurants. Bidding has started and will continue on through the day of the anniversary sale. All proceeds from the silent auction will go toward Habitat for Humanity and the house builds.
