Valparaiso Police Department Hosts National Night Out

The Valparaiso Police Department on Tuesday night participated in their eighth annual National Night Out along with thousands of other communities across the nation.

The national initiative, held on August 2, 2011, has “proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in the fight for a safer nation.

Approximately 25 officers from the Valparaiso Police Department participated in the initiative, including K-9, patrol, and bicycle officers, as well as Police Chief Michael Brickner. Chief Brickner noted, “This is just a wonderful opportunity to connect with and get to know some of the residents. It is very good for us and the community.

Ten neighborhoods throughout Valparaiso participated, more than any previous year that the city’s police department took part in the initiative. This year’s participating neighborhoods included Essex Park, High Sierra, Lexington Green, Pine Creek, Central, the 1100 block of Napoleon Street, Villa on Vale Park, Meridian Woods, Campbell Meadows, and Oak Grove.

The officers and volunteers passed out items to children in each neighborhood, including educational materials, pencils, police badge stickers, and wrist bands, and those present had an opportunity to pet the K-9 dogs as well.

The event went over very well, and it’s great to see our community and police department work together to make our city a safer place!
