City Prepares For 100 Degree Day

Temperatures are expected to reach into the triple digits tomorrow for the first time this year. In advance of the hot weather, the City of Valparaiso has implemented it's emergency cooling center protocol.

Cooling centers will be housed at Valparaiso University at 1509 Chapel Drive and 1410 Chapel Drive from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There will also be centers at the Valparaiso YMCA, 1202 Cumberland Crossing, Valpo Branch of the Public Library, 103 Jefferson St., Vale Park Enrichment Center at Banta, 605 Beech St, St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, 1511 LaPorte Ave. and Ivy Tech Community College Northwest Valpo Campus, 3100 Ivy Tech Drive.

The Valparaiso Police Department also offers a program that will help people during weather emergency, specifically when the temperature is above 100 degrees. To set up a welfare check for a loved one or yourself, contact Sgt. Michael Grennes at mgrennes@valpopd.com or call (219) 462-2135. The Valparaiso Police Department will check on the residents.

There is also the possibility that as more and more air conditions are used, power shortages may occur in large parts of the city. If you do not have a functioning air conditioner for any reason, please feel free to use one of the cooling centers listed above.

IF YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY AT ANY TIME, DIAL 911 IMMEDIATELY!
