Purdue University North Central Welcomes Traveling Veteran Wall

traveling-wall-tribute-1On July 3, the American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT) along with the Traveling Vietnam Wall made their way to visit Purdue University North Central. Even before walking through the event gates, visitors stopped to take pictures of the gigantic Prisoners of War/Missing in Action (POW/MIA) flag. Although a heat advisory was in effect, a crowd of at least 500 people came to pay tribute to American veterans and their families.

“We are very happy to have the AVTT Wall here. A great size crowd as well. We hope to have thousands of people come while the Wall is displayed,” said John Coggins, the Dean of Students at Purdue University North Central.

The opening ceremony started promptly at seven o’clock and included many facts, stories, tribute displays and memorable quotes. Kylee Barnett from The Wall Gang in Michigan City sang the National Anthem as well as God Bless the U.S.A., which emotionally ended the ceremony. Five hundred voices beautifully joined together, finishing the song united. This connection honoring all veterans was truly something to remember.

Steve Moore, President of the Wall Gang, gave a marvelous speech about what freedom means to America. “From the beginning of time, man has fought and died for freedom. This nation was founded on the concept of freedom. There are only two determining forces that have died for us. One being Jesus Christ, who died for our souls; the other being the American soldier, who died for our freedom.”

Joe Donnelly, representative for Indiana's second congressional district, wrote a letter to all who attended the AVTT Wall event. Dwyane Arnett arrived at the opening ceremony on behalf of Donnelly. In the letter, Donnelly states, “Dear veterans, armed servicemen, family, and friends, today I would like to express my sincere gratitude to our veterans as well as our men and women currently serving in uniform. It is our responsibility to honor their sacrifice.”

Distinguished serviceman Brigadier General David Wood informed all of the attendees that Indiana has the fourth largest National Guard (Army division) involvement in all of the United States. When asked his opinion about how the commemoration was organized, he explained, “The event was fantastic, well put together, and had a beautiful display. It really honors our veterans and the people who went before us, so it was an honor for me to be invited to speak [for the National Guard and for fellow servicemen and women].”

Purdue University North Central is truly fortunate to host such a breathtaking marvel. The U.S. veterans on land, in the sea, in the air, injured, captured, missing, or at home will always be deeply revered and appreciated for making the ultimate sacrifice to protect and serve. As the fireworks light up the sky this year, remember that we must never forget the lives lost to solidify our liberty and freedom.
