Some Final Thoughts as We Travel Home

Governor Daniels and the entire Indiana delegation believe that this has been a very productive trip. The commerce model is growing more global each day. This has had both positive and negative ramifications for the US economy. We can pretend its not happening and in the long run our citizens will suffer. Rather, it's imperative that we embrace the change and find the opportunities for our state and local communities. Japan is much like the US in that it is a mature and advanced economy. We have partnered with them for many years and its vital to continue to build on those collaborative efforts. Japan is a strong ally in Asia and maintaining our close ties, both politically and economically is wise. China, in contrast, is an emerging economy with seemingly unlimited potential. I think the entire delegation was impressed with the sheer magnitude of the potential. There is a rampant entrepreneurial ethos in China that is fueled by private enterprise and bold investment by the government in technology and infrastructure.

To some degree they are benefiting from technology in a more dramatic way because they can adopt the latest science now as they build their infrastructure. Its always more economical to build new than to try to retrofit old technology. In any event, China is an economic force with vast potential. The time is now to build lasting partnerships with Chinese businesses and governments so that an interdependent economic model can benefit both countries and serve as a foundation for healthy political relations. Now its time to pack and head back home. Its been a long trip and I am anxious to see my family. Thanks for following my blog.
