Porter County League of Women Voters Offers Voters Rides to the Polls on Election Day

league-of-women-voters-logoThe League of Women Voters chapter for Porter County has rekindled and started up after a hiatus of nearly two years…and they’ve hit the ground running.

After meeting on Monday, October 6th and passing the necessary bylaws and policies required by the state and national League, they got down to business. New members joined on the spot, local issues were voted on, officers were elected, a regular meeting time and place was chosen, and then – they selected their first action.

“Our first action as a chapter will be to offer rides to the polls for voters in Porter County that need one on Election Day,” said Valerie Lambert, newly elected Chair of the chapter.

“In the future, we’d like to hold candidate debates and additional events similar to other League chapters,” Lambert continued, “But since our chapter has just officially formed this close to Election Day, we don’t feel we have the time to put a more detailed event together.”

Anyone needing a ride to the polls on Election Day (Tuesday, November 4th) should email the Porter County League Chapter at LWVporter@gmail.com with their specific name, address, phone number and two hour time window they need to be transported. The deadline for requesting transportation is Tuesday, October 28th.

Future chapter meetings will be held every 2nd Monday of the month on the Valparaiso University campus, from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm. The next meeting is on Monday, November 10th at the Christopher Center Library, in the 2nd Floor Board Room. All are welcome to attend – including men, who have been eligible to become members of the League of Women Voters since 1974.

Some may not know that the League is a non-partisan organization and is governed by specific issues rather than endorsing any party or candidate. Although the national League of Women Voters works on nearly a dozen issues, the Porter County chapter voted to begin with three: Voters’ Services, Strengthening Public Education and Defending the Environment.
