Valpo’s Public Works to Move to 1855 Joliet Rd.

Valparaiso-Vibrant-VisionaryAt last! Valparaiso’s Public Works department will be relocating to its new facility at 1855 Joliet Rd. on Friday, Nov. 21. The old facility at 406 Don Hovey Drive will close to the public at the close of business (4:00 p.m.) on Nov. 20.

To ease the transition, the public should be aware of the following:

Thursday, Nov. 20 will be the final day of the season for loading compost at Public Works, 406 Don Hovey Drive.

Thursday, Nov. 20 will be the final day for dropping off electronics, used fluorescent light bulbs, and batteries at Public Works, 406 Don Hovey Dr. After Nov. 20, these items should be taken to the County Compost Site, 2150 W. Lincolnway, which is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays through Dec. 6 (but closed for the Thanksgiving holiday). Thursday, Nov. 20 will be the final day for dropping off appliances at Public Works, 406 Don Hovey Dr., however the city will continue to provide curbside pickup of appliances for city residents with city trash pickup. After Nov. 20, appliances may be dropped off at Metro Recycling, 2155 Joliet Rd. (465-1459) or L&S Metal, 551 Factory St. (465-1538). Be sure to call for hours of operation.

The Public Works office will be closed on Friday, Nov. 21 for moving. On that day, dumpster permits will be available at City Hall, 166 Lincolnway. You may leave a message at Public Works, 462-4612 for a return call on Monday. For emergencies involving Public Works services, you may call City Hall at 462-1161.

The new facility at 1855 Joliet Rd. will open officially on Monday, Nov 24 with the existing telephone number, 462-4612. Hours of operation will also remain the same: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The new Public Works facility will be a shared space for 75 employees from Public Works and Utilities. It offers efficiencies in customer service, database management, and equipment sharing. More than three times the size of the outdated facility on Don Hovey Drive, the new facility is large enough to expand with the city’s growing needs.
