Tips from SERVPRO for Beating the Winter Cold

servpro-winter-fireIt's cold. Too cold. Cold enough that space heaters, heating blankets, fire places, and thermostats are in full usage.

But here's some important information that could potentially save your home. According to FEMA home fires occur more in winter than any other season. Here are some tips to avoid damage to your property:

Keep portable generators outside and far, far away from your house.
Test your carbon monoxide alarms at least once a month and if you don't have them, install them.
Have a qualified professional test your chimney and vents every month.
Store cooled ashes in a covered metal container, keeping it outside and at least 10 feet away from your home and other things that could catch fire.
Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from any heat source.
Plug only one heat-producing appliance into an electrical outlet at a time.

You can stay warm but you can also stay safe. Follow these tips and stay toasty, my friends.
