Valparaiso Names Mooney Redevelopment Director

Valparaiso-Vibrant-VisionaryThe City of Valparaiso Redevelopment Commission has named Jim Mooney as its new Executive Director, beginning Jan. 15. Mooney has more than 25 years of experience in economic development, is the author of six books on economic development, and serves as a guest instructor throughout the United States and Canada on business topics. He has lived in Valparaiso for 20 years. “When the opportunity to perform economic development for my own town presented itself, I couldn’t pass it up,” he said. Mooney replaces John Shepherd who has served as Interim Director for the past two years.

“We are quite fortunate to have found someone with Jim’s credentials and experience to lead our Redevelopment Commission,” said Mayor Jon Costas. “Jim is also a great advocate for Valparaiso. The city has been able to accomplish so much over the past decade in partnership with a strong redevelopment commission. We look forward to working with Jim.” In recent years, the RDC has been instrumental in projects, such as the revitalization of downtown, creation of Central Park Plaza, and the completion of roundabouts throughout the city.

“The Valparaiso Redevelopment Commission welcomes Jim Mooney and wishes to thank John Shepherd for his service,” said Patrick Lyp, Valparaiso’s Economic Development Director. “Valparaiso has been the beneficiary of John’s extensive knowledge and experience over the past two years. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to both work with and learn from John, and I appreciate his willingness to help with the leadership transition as Jim begins,” he said.

The RDC is responsible for implementing the city’s redevelopment plans, directing projects that enhance the city. The six-member commission works to enhance the city using tax increment funding for projects that demonstrate value to the community. The Executive Director coordinates the planning process between the Commission and city staffs in developing budgets, seeking grant funding when appropriate.
