Valparaiso Police Partner with Valpo University Students/Faculty to Offer an Inside Look into VPD

VPD-VU-Academy-2016-01The Valparaiso Police recently partnered with Valparaiso University students and faculty to bring awareness to the daily activities of the police department. The VU police academy is a smaller version of the department’s Citizens’ Police Academy.

The new five week program is designed to introduce students and faculty members to many of the topics discussed daily in the media. The topics discussed included; use of force procedures, traffic stop procedures, hiring process, police in house-training program, firearms training, police history, K9 program, initiating video/body cameras and the department’s accreditation process.

Most classes are hosted at the university and the new program is designed to open lines of communication and provide transparency into the Valparaiso Police Department. Assistant Professor of Art, Liz Wuerffel and Byron Martin, Director of Multicultural Programs at the University each assisted police with the initiation of this new program.

For additional details regarding the program contact Sgt. Michael Grennes at mgrennes@valpopd.com. Ms. Wuerffel has also attended all the classes and can be contacted at liz.wuerffel@valpo.edu.
