“I wish it would have only been 3,” jokes Kelly A. Turner, Ph.D, “My book and dissertation would have been shorter.” She is talking about her book, Radical Remission: Surviving Cancer Against All Odds, which chronicles the 9 common healing factors that cancer survivors have used to heal their bodies. Turner spent a decade researching cases of radical remission, or the healing of cancer without the use, or after the failure of, modern Western medicine.
Turner knew she wanted to be a counselor to cancer patients, but then she began noticing certain medical cases that made her switch courses. She found that there were individuals who, either without the help of Western medicine or after being told Western medicine could do no more for them, managed to, unexpectedly, go into remission. These cases were often seen as random or without an hypothesis, but Turner decided to take the time to study them deeper; she earned her Ph.D and went straight into research.
Tuner found, throughout research of over 1,500 cases, that people would go into radical remission for varied and numerous reasons, but they would each have 9 criteria in common. She shared stories of these individuals who, despite being given a terminal diagnosis, were able to overcome their cancer.
Turner’s talk, held at Purdue Northwest's Westville campus, was part of the 63rd season of the Sinai Forum.
“This is an opportunity to bring great thought leaders to this region,” said Leslie Plesac, Executive Director of the Sinai Forum, “It’s a chance for people to come together and hear an expert talk about topics of interest.”
The Sinai Forum brings speakers from various industries and schools of academia to campus and invites the public to sit in and listen. Students, as always, pay no admission as part of Purdue Northwest’s commitment to providing a well-rounded learning experience.
Upcoming speakers for the 2016 Sinai Forum include: Jason Amerine, retired US Army war hero (October 23), Bret Stephens, Pulitzer Prize winner and deputy editorial page editor of The Wall Street Journal (November 13), and Jerry Ross, retired astronaut and Crown Point native who holds the world record for space flights (December 4).
