Habitat for Humanity of Porter County End of 2016 Re-Cap

Habitat-for-HumanityYour involvement has had a major impact on our success by making the following plans become reality. We simply couldn’t do it without you.

Our first home build in Portage

  • 2nd Women Build
  • First female crew leader
  • The Delk-Bartman Family celebrated their Home Dedication in November

Sonja Vargas’ home build closed in March.

  • It is accessible for her son, Isaiah who is a paraplegic

Two area churches; First Presbyterian of Valparaiso, and Bethlehem Lutheran of Chesterton, along with Thrivent Financial, partnered with us

  • Built an accessibility ramp for a 100 year old woman which allowed her to remain in her home.
  • Built a handicap ramp for a 25 year old paraplegic man who was then able to leave his own home.

Great things are anticipated as we prepare to open our very own ReStore in early 2017.

  • Opening a ReStore will provide countless opportunities for community involvement.

Coordinating various groups and types of volunteers was our pleasure.

  • Nipsco sent a crew of interns
  • Valparaiso University Phi Delta Theta Fraternity sent a crew of 12 guys through the United Way Day of Caring
  • Mother/Daughters came for a day
  • Single Mom’s came to help
  • Retired Men had time to invest
  • A Father/Son team from Crown Point Boy Scout Pack #48 made a bench for the front porch of the Portage home. It was presented at the Home Dedication as a surprise to our new partner family.
  • Mirror Image Dance Academy Performing Company girls blessed 9 year old Madison with a “Box of Sunshine” at her Home Dedication ceremony.
  • Student Council/Key Club from Morgan Township High School organized a work day for the Foreste Home wall build in Hebron.

We look forward to the New Year and the opportunity to continue to change lives by giving a hand up!
