Valpo Compost Site Closed Saturday, February 10, 2018

Compost-piles-compressedThe Valparaiso compost site, 2150 W. Lincolnway, will be closed Saturday, Feb. 10, due to the predicted snowstorm. The site’s next scheduled day of operation is Feb. 17.

The Valparaiso compost site is currently open Saturdays only from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Saturday off-season hours will continue through March 24, weather permitting.

Porter County residents can use the site to drop off yard waste including leaves, garden clippings, household plants, brush, limbs, logs and firewood. No lumber or treated wood will be accepted.

A number of other materials are accepted for recycling at the site, including electronics, household batteries, toner cartridges, and fluorescent light bulbs (tubes and CFLs). Old media is also accepted, but only CDs, DVDs and computer games. No audio or video cassettes or anything else with tape (film).

The compost site is owned by the City of Valparaiso and operates with assistance from the Porter County Recycling & Waste Reduction. The site will open for the season on March 26. The Boone Groove compost site, 546 S. 400 W, will remain closed through March 26, when it will open for the season. The site is owned and operated by the district.
