Day of Caring Projects to Help Revitalize PCACS

united-way-day-of-caring-2012Porter County Aging and Community Services is seeking volunteers for its Day of Caring projects, which focus on improvements at the agency’s building and grounds.

The United Way’s Day of Caring on Aug. 24 unites community members and not-for-profits for a day of volunteerism and teamwork. The Porter County event begins with a breakfast kick-off at Strongbow Inn.

Kathy Wojkovich, director of the United Way Regional Volunteer Center, said the Day of Caring is an avenue to connect the community to region agencies.

“This is a remarkable annual event that brings local companies, civic groups and churches into the doors of our local non-profits to see what great services they provide and to complete much-needed projects for them,” she said. “It is also a chance to build new relationships and many companies feel that their team bonds by working together out of the office for such a great cause.”

PCACS is looking for assistance on the following projects. Those wanting to participate can sign up at: www.nwivolunteer.org

Painting update: PCACS is in need of volunteers to paint several rooms at the agency’s building, 1005 Campbell St. The work is only on the walls and some nail-hole patching is also needed. The update will pave the way for new tenants after the move of Head Start out of the building.

Weed reduction: Volunteers are needed to remove weeds from the agency’s back parking lot area. Participants should supply their own equipment and it is advised that they wear pants and long-sleeved shirts.

PCACS Executive Director Bruce Lindner said the annual day celebrates the strong community spirit that is rooted in the region.

“The event is an opportunity to unite volunteers, create new ties and help area agencies who serve so many individuals,” he said. “The Day of Caring projects are often centered on tasks that agencies need to have done but may not have the funds to complete.”

While the event may be just one day a year, Wojkovich hopes it showcases the numerous volunteer opportunities that exist at not-for-profits year-round.

“The Day of Caring spotlights how we can all work together not only on a designated day but also throughout the year to support all the Northwest Indiana agencies that are impacting lives,” Lindner added.

PCACS’ mission is to extend a helping hand to seniors, those who are disabled and low-income residents by providing services to improve their quality of life, including transportation, nutrition programs, energy assistance and activity centers.
