Raising Money with Movember

During the month of November, many people partake in “No-Shave-November.” The rules are pretty simple: do not shave for the entire month. Once December1st hits, most of those itchy beards will be gone and mostly forgotten. A similar event not too many people are aware of is Movember. Nope, that's not a typo. Put mustache and November together and you get MO-vember. Movember has similarities to No-Shave-November, but two main attributes stick out. The first is the physical attribute: you only grow your mustache. The second is you raise money.

Beginning in 2003 in Austrailia with 30 participants, Movember has climbed off the charts in terms of participants and money raised. In 2010, there were around 448,000 participants in the world and over $80 million raised for the cause. Out of those hundreds of thousands of people, around 65,000 of those Mo Bros were from the United States. We hope you will join the cause in the future and support men's health around the world.

My “mo bro” as well as my actual bro, Brian Scott, and I have participated in Movember for the last two years. Our motivation to grow out our mo's and raise money comes from our dad, Dennis Scott's, long battle with prostate cancer. Our dad passed away from prostate cancer in February of 2011. Our overall goal is to help raise money for the cause and spread awareness for the disease that affects 1 in 4 men in the United States. Something as simple and amusing as unexpected facial hair on a friend does exactly what Movember was made to do. In a sense, for the month of November, we become walking and talking billboards, spurring up conversation between friends and strangers about our mo's and prostate cancer.

In the past two years, we have raise almost $1000 dollars, all of which goes to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, LiveStrong, Movembers Global Action Planand Awarenessand Education. We will continue this fight to end prostate cancer as long as we are around. Please help spread the word about the intensity of this disease that is not as evident in the media and news as it should be. More information can be found on their website.

Most importantly, during this holiday season give your dad, grandpa, or whomever in your life your love, a hug/handshake/kiss and thank them for everything they do. Hold dear all the time you have or have had with them.
