Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana to Host Mayors For Meals Day on March 20

Meals-on-WheelsMeals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana announced today that it will be holding Mayors For Meals Day as a part of its March For Meals campaign. Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson will be participating in the event to show her support for our community’s homebound and hungry seniors. “It is an honor to lend my support to Meals on Wheels. They provide a needed resource to residents of Gary and all of Lake County and it is important that they have all the volunteer and support they need to get the job done.” said Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson.

In recognition of Mayors For Meals Day, Meals on Wheels will host a press conference on Wednesday, March 20, at 9:30 a.m. at the Meals on Wheels Central Kitchen located at 8446 Virginia Street in Merrillville. Community Leaders from across the region be invited to experience the Meals on Wheels Mission and to be a pro-active agent of change in our community.

“We are excited about having Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson participate in our Mayors for Meals Day event,” said Sandra Noe, Executive Director “On March 20, leaders in our community will join with Mayor Freeman-Wilson to increase public awareness for senior hunger, recruit new volunteers and increase local funding toward our goal to end Senior Hunger.

March For Meals is a national campaign during the month of March, initiated by the Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA), which seeks to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on the part of the local community.

Senior Nutrition Programs across the United States, like Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana promote March For Meals in their local communities through public events, partnerships with local businesses, volunteer recruitment and fundraising initiatives. Mayors For Meals Day is a component of March For Meals that utilizes the involvement of local Mayors and other local elected officials.
