No Rest For This Volunteer

PATH-InternationalLisa Way is someone who wants to make a difference in her community. When she is not busy with work she is either at a local barn called Exceptional Equestrians Unlimited or helping out with Great Lakes Greyhound of Indiana. When she is at the E.E.U. barn, she is most likely giving lessons to students. E.E.U. is an organization that provides children and adults with disabilities a chance to learn about and ride horses. If Lisa is not teaching a lesson, she might be helping to clean out the stalls, feeding the horses, cleaning the isles, or an array of other chores that are done there. Lisa became a PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International) certified instructor back in 1997 and has been helping with E.E.U. ever since. “I love meeting all the kids and their parents. The friendship you develop with them and all the volunteers is pricesless,” said Lisa Way.

When Lisa goes home from the barn she plays with her Greyhound that she adopted a few years ago. After her first Greyhound died, she went looking for one to adopt. While looking around she discovered Great Lakes Greyhound of Indiana at Petsmart. She fell in love with one named Pal and eventually adopted him. She wanted to socialize Pal and have him get used to being around people. Lisa said, “The more I went to Petsmart to socialize Pal, the more I fell in love with the Great Lakes Greyhound family”. “My favorite part of volunteering with Great Lakes Greyhound of Indiana is fostering. When you get a new dog in the program you have to teach them how to walk up and down stairs and that windows and screen doors are there and you can’t walk through them”. Lisa said that the first dogs she fostered were hard to let go when they got adopted, but she does not have that problem anymore because she knows they are going to good homes. “I love volunteering and both of the organizations that I work with are so rewarding in their own ways. It keeps me busy, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” Lisa said.
