Its goal is to build a stronger community where each person has the opportunity to achieve the aspirations we all share: a quality education for our children, a safe place to live, food on the table, and the security that comes with financial independence.
Unlike other non-profit organizations, United Way has the unique ability to bring together multiple resources — businesses, non profits, donors and volunteers — to meet immediate needs as well as create positive lasting change. Through the generous donations of multiple community partners and donors, United Way invests in critical programs at 38 partner agencies, as well in United Way initiatives, with measurable results.
“United Way is an extremely effective way to invest in our community. With 98.5% of every dollar staying right here in Porter County, we are able to make a significant impact on the lives of our friends and neighbors,” said Sharon Kish, President of United Way of Porter County. “We are blessed to live in such a giving community where countless people are willing to give of their time and resources to better the lives of others.”
With the support of individual donors, business supporters, countless volunteers and partners, we are building a stronger community.
This year, United Way of Porter County unveiled its Be the One campaign. “The theme of the campaign is so meaningful because it truly does only take one person to change a life,” said Greg Farrall, 2013-2014 United Way Campaign Chair. “Our individual gifts, when multiplied with financial gifts from others, combined with thousands of volunteer hours and enhanced by partnerships with other organizations, make a remarkable impact both now and for the future. And it all starts with one person stepping forward and being the one to make a difference.”
Creating lasting change in Porter County begins with one person - one person to help a child perform better in school, one person to help a struggling family get back on their feet, one person to feed a couple who might not eat today. It just takes one person to make a difference.

DID YOU KNOW?
Just last year, because of United Way of Porter County:
- 174 individuals received financial literacy education, helping them become self sufficient
- 822 students received tutoring, improving their math and reading scores by 93%
- 300 seniors and low-income families received free tax preparation, maximizing their refunds and returning over $300,000 to our community
- 4,889 students received help in making a career choice
- 1,123 people volunteered for 79 projects at 40 nonprofits through the UW Day of Caring, an impact of $100,000
- 106 first and second grade classrooms received UW Reading Buddies, dramatically improving reading scores
