Opportunity Enterprises Seeks Volunteers for Pack-a-Thon

For one day every year, the workshop at Opportunity Enterprises transforms into a hub of volunteer activity during its annual Pack-a-thon event.

Hundreds of people from throughout the community gather to help the not-for-profit organization pack more than 43,000 runner bags for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. OE has taken on this huge task for the past nine years with the help of volunteer teams and individuals.

As a result, the OE Pack-a-thon has become one of the largest single-organization volunteer events in Northwest Indiana, combining music, camaraderie and high energy for a day of service and fun. And OE Volunteer Coordinator Cathy Kuchenmeister said this year would be no different.

“The room is full of energy and the volunteers feed off of that, and they feed off one another,” she said. “It’s a great bonding experience for any group that wants to stress the importance of teamwork and service.”

Individuals can volunteer by themselves or they can form a team. About 800 people are expected to support this cause, which will run from 8 a.m. to about 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 19 at Opportunity Enterprises, 2801 Evans Ave. in Valparaiso.

This job is contracted with the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and all proceeds directly benefit OE. The marathon has become the biggest annual fundraiser for the organization as well, with the OE Marathon Team raising more than $1 million during the past 11 years.

Participants can stay for the entire time (8 a.m. to about 2 p.m.) or pack for one three-hour shift.

To reserve a spot, contact Cathy Kuchenmeister at 219-464-9621, Ext. 283, or cathy.kuchenmeister@oppent.org.
