The 4th Annual Soup Bowls for Hungry Event Shows Creativity for a Cause

On Friday, students and faculty of Valparaiso University displayed their original artwork for the fourth annual Soup Bowls for the Hungry Silent Auction. Artist from classes and other faculty members made ceramic bowls, along with digital and drawn interpretations of bowls that were available to buy at the auction.

All proceeds from the auction help benefit the New Creation Men's Center in Valparaiso. This organization is a daytime center helps provide social services, employment opportunities, and general help to men struggling with homelessness in the community.

Head of this event was professor of the arts at Valparaiso University, Michele Corazzo. She helped share some information on this event.

"This event has been going on for some time now, and it's mainly potters that teach in the community. No one makes you do it; you can just organize this event and sell pots for different local causes. Last year we gave it to a women's shelter and this year it's going to a men's shelter," said Corazzo

Along with the fantastic artwork, guests were invited to have some soup and cornbread and were given the opportunity to have a quick lesson in throwing pots. In a separate room, volunteers showed people how spin a pot and invited guests to try it out themselves.

This event is important to Corazzo, and has been something she looks forward to organizing every year.

"I wanted to do this long ago. I kind of decided on my own that I was just going to do it. This is my room this is where I work, so I felt confident that I could host it here. Once I set it up, I got the word out and got it on the calendar, help just poured in, so it's great," said Corazzo.

Today's event benefited a local cause and gave students and faculty the opportunity to share their artwork. The variety of bowls and artwork were impressive, and volunteers showed their dedication to the school, as well as their dedication to giving back to the community.
