About Canstruction Build Day
Purdue University Northwest- Calumet Campus and Purdue University Northwest- North Central Campus are signature sponsors of Canstruction Northwest Indiana. The student teams will meet at Southlake Mall and bring their designs to life in an exciting five-hour competition. Each team is responsible for building a structure that creatively interprets the superhero theme, using canned food items, while not altering the food labels.

The competitors consist of middle school students from Lake and Porter counties. In preparation for this competition, the students have completed their designs with their volunteer coaches and Purdue University Northwest-Calumet campus engineering students. During design camp, which was held at Ivy Tech-Valparaiso campus, the teams created a sketch of their structures and also calculated the canned food items needed in order to create their structures. At virtual camp, the teams met at Purdue University Northwest-Calumet campus: Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation (CIVS), each team was paired with a Purdue University engineering team leader who guided them through a 3-D simulation of their structure.

Canstruction Community Participation:
From Saturday, July 25th to Saturday, August 2nd the general public is being asked to cast their votes on their favorite “Superheroes Against Hunger” structure. Ballot boxes will be placed at the center court and various other locations throughout Southlake Mall.
