Chesterton Makes Halloween Extra Sweet with Downtown Trick or Treat

Halloween is the time of year that many kids and adults look forward to. Dressing up, eating massive amounts of candy, the crazy and cute decorations, it's all good fun. And the Duneland Chamber of Commerce always kicks it up a notch. Each year, the town of Chesterton has businesses in the downtown area that open their door to trick-or-treaters. It's a safe and fun way to celebrate Halloween.

Over 1,000 kids came out last year, and the Chamber had an even bigger turnout this year because they had a more expansive layout. Along with the regular participants, other organizations who wanted to give out candy downtown were welcomed to be part of the event. Purple flyers on businesses windows noted what business were participating.

Thomas Centennial Park was filled with businesses giving out candy and storefronts along Indian Boundary, Calumet, and Broadway saw little Hulks, Supermen (and women), Ironmen, minions, Elsas, princesses, ninjas, a piece of pizza, a Barbie still in her box, and more pop in and out of of their doors, their bags filling to the brim with candy. When a break was needed, the patrons would head to the park and play in the fallen leaves.

Parents accompanied their kids. Some even dressed up in costume. Some went even further and dressed up the family pooch.

"This is more of a chance for the businesses to get involved in the community. Chamber members and nonchamber members can get involved and businesses who aren't located downtown have a chance to be part of it by setting up booths in the Chamber parking lot." Kristina Koliboski, Office Coordinator for the Duneland Chamber said.

This is beneficial not only for the sheer fact that candy is involved, but the community is able to learn about their local businesses in a relaxed and fun setting.

"We came to hand out candy to the kids and share our services," NorthShore Health Centers Community Outreach Coordinator Maysha Carlson said. "There are so many kids here! I think that there were many more here than we expected."
