A surprise visit and a random act of kindness by the Porter County Community Foundation staff to Gabriel’s Horn in Portage last week made Mignon Kennedy’s day. The Foundation presented gift cards to help the residents of the women’s shelter purchase food or personal items for their families. “This is perfect timing,” said Kennedy, Executive Director. “We were out of gift cards and have a new resident coming in over the weekend.”
The Foundation celebrated Random Acts of Kindness Week (February 9-15) by surprising nonprofit partners throughout Porter County with small gifts to support the nonprofits’ good work.
A special delivery to Pleasant Township Food Pantry helped stock the shelves with food, laundry detergent and paper products. “The Kouts pantry serves 35 families on a regular basis,” noted Township Trustee Jean Oehlman. “We want to make sure that nobody ever goes hungry.”
Call-A-Ride volunteer and founding member Bev DePra was surprised by the Foundation staff at the Hebron Chamber meeting when presented with a gas card for the organization’s new transport van. The all-volunteer group provides free transportation to medical appointments for those without means of transportation.
The random acts also touched Dayspring Women’s Center. Executive Director Rachel Niemi noted that the simple gift of bus tokens for the day residents will provide three months of free bus rides on the V-Line in Valparaiso.
Frontline Foundations in Chesterton received a restaurant gift certificate to a favorite pizza place. Development Director Derek Frazier thanked the staff and noted how a meal at group counseling sessions helps break down barriers. “As you know,” Frazier said, “food is the glue.”
