Habitat for Humanity of Porter County, the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, is currently taking applications for partner families. habitat-for-humanity

Information sessions will be held on Saturday, March 27 at the Valparaiso YMCA (1201 Cumberland Crossing Drive) at 10 am and the Hebron Public Library (201 West Sigler Street) at 2 pm. Potential applicants are encouraged to attend one session. Eligible applicants will be considered for this year’s build sites in Hebron and Valparaiso. Applications will be accepted as an e-mailed PDF file or postmarked through Wednesday, April 14 for consideration.

To qualify for a Habitat house, applicants must demonstrate a need for housing. Current living conditions could be substandard, overcrowded or unaffordable (rent=50% or more of gross income). Gross income of the family must be less than 50% of the area median income in Porter County. Applicants must also currently have lived in or held a job in Porter County for a minimum of one year.
Families should demonstrate the willingness to partner with Habitat on home construction. Partner families are required to put in 300 hours of “sweat equity” volunteer work on their new home, along with a down payment on the property. Selected partner families, in turn, receive an interest-free mortgage through Habitat for Humanity.
