Habitat for Humanity of Porter County Building a Better Community One Home at a Time

Founded in 1994, Habitat for Humanity of Porter County has been committed to making housing affordable in the region for over 20 years. Their mission is one of compassion and serving the members of our community who need it most, believing that everyone deserves the opportunity to have simple, decent, and affordable housing. The vital work that they do is supported by the noble staff of Habitat as well as volunteers, local businesses, and other local organizations who want to build up their community.

The home recipients partner with Habitat and work alongside volunteers to build their homes, take financial classes, and pay an affordable mortgage. In the past, Habitat has built 27 houses in Porter County, their most recent project being a home for veteran Tina Sanders. They also build ramps for those with disabilities and mobility issues, like Kouts veteran, Dennis Spagna.

Kelly Longhi has recently become Executive Director for the organization, though she has been with the organization for over a year now, having entered the nonprofit as Director of Volunteer Experience. In that position, Kelly worked hard to cultivate and find the best volunteers throughout Porter County, working with volunteers as they help families in need get affordable and sustainable housing. Taking her proactive and motivated nature from that position into leading the organization as they build on the successes of the past, Kelly is excited for what the future holds.

Currently, they are working on their largest build in Porter County to date for the Forste family on Maxwell Street, in Hebron. The Forste’s are a family of ten and never thought they would be able to own their own home, but thanks to Habitat for Humanity, they will have their own place to grow, learn and have fun. As with any ongoing project, they are eager to get dedicated volunteers and sponsors to help out and make the Forste family’s dreams come true!

Valparaiso is home to many great nonprofits, and Habitat for Humanity of Porter County is a continued vital resource to building up the community and creating a brighter future.
