Horseshoe Casino in Hammond has become a central hub for fun and festivities in Northwest Indiana, allowing guests not only to have a great time playing their games and enjoying the food and atmosphere, but also hosting a plethora of community events and concerts. They have become a true staple of the Region throughout the years and an important part of the Hammond community.
“Horseshoe Casino and Hammond have a very positive, symbiotic relationship. We benefit when the city does well or is robust, and the same holds true in reverse,” said Dan Nita, Senior Vice-President and General Manager at Horseshoe Hammond. “The more that the City is able to enhance economic development, better the infrastructure, convince more homeowners to live in the City of Hammond through their college-bound program, those are tremendous things for us. The more stable and positively the City of Hammond is viewed, the better it is for us. When guests are making decisions on where to visit, if Hammond is viewed as a safe great place to go to, it enhances our reputation as well.”
When giving back to the community that they serve, Horseshoe and its employees always try to identify areas of need in the Region, whether it be on the subject of poverty, substance abuse, or children.
“Much of our outreach from a community standpoint has been to try and provide support for those in need. Last year for Haven House, which is a shelter for battered women and elders, we provided financial support. We bought new mattresses, new carpet, new furniture, new kitchen countertops. And our facilities team loves making things, so we made a new back deck, and a new area for the children to play in the back. It’s extremely important, it’s a place that’s a true refuge,” said Nita.
Horseshoe also spent a few days with Campagna Academy, which aids children with emotional, mental, and physical challenges. The Horseshoe team did landscaping and created a lending library as well as donating personalized bedsheets for the kids. A lot of children that come to the location have nothing to call their own, so in order to help them feel a little more empowered, Horseshoe bought them a variety of bedding to choose from.
Horseshoe has also helped support the Gary Crisis Center, which offers over a half dozen programs and services, such as counseling, emergency youth shelter, runaway/homeless youth outreach, and more. Nita also happens to be on the Crisis Center’s board and enjoys helping them in their vital mission.
“We’re concerned with trying to figure out the area that is in the greatest need and that’s how our organization likes to spend its charitable time. Helping those important areas,” explained Nita.
This doesn’t all come from the top of the organization though, a lot of employees at Horseshoe have personal charities they like to champion. One thing they’ve done every month is “Jeans for a Cause,” in which the employees get a five-dollar payroll deduction and sticker saying they contributed to the charity of their choice. This gives guests the opportunity to ask why they are dressed down and they can champion the cause that they are advocating for.
“Our ability to help out with a group like that creates an immense amount of employee pride as well, knowing that our organization is helping the community,” said Nita.
