Valparaiso Veteran Honored with Quilt of Valor

Steve Kulavick is an active member of the Valparaiso Family YMCA and a Navy veteran who served our country (1966-1970). Quilts are awarded to U.S. military service members and veterans who have been touched by war. His unique quilt was awarded to say thank you for his service, sacrifice and valor in serving our nation. Nominated by a friend in his exercise class, the Quilt of Valor was presented to him in his Silver Sneakers class at the YMCA. Proud family members and friends at the Y were present and understood how much this meant to him. The quilt was presented by Flo Schneider and Amy Mariani who are co-leaders of the String-A-Long Stars and Stripes Quilts of Valor Group of Indiana on June 1st.

The list of Steve’s military honors is extensive. He rose from the rank of AZ3 Aviation Maintenance Administration Man, Petty Officer 3rd Class. He was stationed in Vietnam on the USS Ogden, a transport naval vessel used to command of medivac helicopters and transport of equipment. After he returned home, he continued as a member of the DAV and VFW in Valparaiso. Today, he enjoys working with fellow veterans and sharing his knowledge of benefits through the VA. He enjoys sharing his uplifting message of the 3Fs: Fight, Fight to the finish and Faith. He shares the power of prayer and is making a difference in the lives of others.

Steve has always been known for his upbeat attitude. Even though he has faced some challenges in his life, he remains an inspiration for others.

During his service he was exposed to Agent Orange. Many millions of Americans were affected by this exposure, and today, Steve is a survivor of throat cancer.

"I continue to keep my focus on continuing a healthy lifestyle. My family and friends were present during the surprise presentation of the quilt and that means so much to me. Receiving this quilt is a huge honor and the biggest honor of my military career." Kulavick said.
