Calvary Link: Holy Leisure

Calvary-Link-Good-to-be-HomeAncient Christian writers used a Latin phrase that I just love. It is translated "Holy Leisure" (L.--Otium Sanctum). The expression celebrates the importance of eating, playing, reading, resting, contemplating, and enjoying the company of friends. It embraces the biblical idea that we aren't created to work all the time (see Genesis 2:1-3 & cf.). Indeed, God himself rested, and as C. S. Lewis reminds us, "There's no use in trying to be more spiritual than God."

I really hope you create some time for holy leisure in your life this summer. Of course, setting aside time for worship on Sunday mornings is a big part of that. Stop everything you are doing and worship with the community every Sunday! And in addition to worship, make time to hang out with your Life Group, open your home for friends (old and new), go to a ball game, or enjoy some time on the porch with an improving book.

The distracting din of daily life can make it harder to hear the voice of God. Creating time for holy leisure will make it easier to listen, and you may just find that this summer will be a time for real spiritual renewal. As usual, I'm in the Word today getting ready for Sunday. And yes, our amazing worship team will be up again this weekend! Looking forward to some holy leisure this Sunday and throughout the summer.
