Appetite for “The Hunger Games” Filled at Barnes & Noble

The Valparaiso Barnes & Noble store became Panem for an hour on Thursday evening as fans of Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark combed the aisles during a scavenger hunt and participated in a trivia contest based on the Suzanne Collins novel “The Hunger Games”.

Those in attendance said they found the novel and it's companion books, “Catching Fire” and “Mockingjay” inspiring and were excited to attend the opening of the film at midnight.

“It's very exciting and full of action, chapter by chapter you just want to know what happens next,” said Jillian Burton, a 12-year old student at Cooks Corner Elementary School. Dawn Burton, Jillian's mother, said that having strong female characters like Katniss was important too. “The girl is so strong and at the same time is doing it for her family,” she said.

Seen by many as the next Harry Potter in terms of popularity the first “The Hunger Games” film opened at midnight Friday morning and many of those who attended this event said they would soon be standing in line at Cinemark at Valparaiso to see the film. Carrie Buhmann, 15, of Hobart, was dressed as Katriss for the event and said that in “The Hunger Games” there is always something exciting going on and it is never boring. “The Hunger Games” event was attended by about 35 teens and preteens.
